Today, no one remembers the name of the BURAN snowmobile. And it's been a screaming thing, and it's a stubborn one of the Northmen.

Starting production

Pavel Fyodorovic Derunov, Director of the Rybin Motor Construction Company, played a key role in the creation of the first mass Soviet snow. He was pushed to this step by the state plan: the major defence enterprises of the USSR were to produce goods of popular consumption.

Air engines were on the EMU. At the plant, 37,000 people were employed during that period, and the director did not wish to disperse the enterprise ' s capacity on the banal boxes. I wanted to release a technically complicated piece.

By selecting a worthy product, a snowstorm, the factories decided to concentrate on the production of a sustainable two-way car designed for serious work.

In 1970, the development of a pilot snowmobile model began, and in March 1971 the first BURAN snowmobile was constructed with an IW-Upiter-3 engine.

However, the power of the motorcycle engine was lacking, and in 1971 the RPM-640 was designed for BURA.

In April 1972, the first batch of snowstorms was issued and tests began. One year later, following the completion of inter-agency tests, the State Commission decided to place BURANOV on serial production.

North tests

A long trial run along the Rybinsk-Workut route was organized to give new technology a wide range and identify its weaknesses. On 18 March, nine " BURANOV " started from Rybinsk, and on 15 April, the residents of Vorkut witnessed an unusual sight: a snow convoy with sanitary trailers took place in the streets of the city.

The run has been successful. The transition provided information to the BURA creators to further improve the machine. The length, complexity and size of the Rabinsk-Workuta team were not equal in the USSR.
